I’ve wanted a place to write at length for a while.

The short-form platforms are good at heat and bad at light. A serious argument about a statute, a policy, or a constitutional question needs room to lay out the facts, walk through the reasoning, and deal honestly with the strongest version of the other side. That doesn’t fit in a post designed to be skimmed between two other posts.

So this is that place. Expect essays on law, policy, and politics — long ones, sometimes with footnotes, and occasionally revised when I get something wrong.

Comments are open at the bottom of every post. I read them.

How to use this site

Everything lives under Writing. Posts are dated, and I’ll note it in the text when I’ve substantively revised one rather than quietly editing it.

A note on how this is built

This site is deliberately boring underneath. It’s static HTML — there’s no database, no admin panel, and no server-side code running when you load a page. That’s a security decision as much as a performance one: the most common way a personal site gets taken over is an out-of-date content management system, and the surest fix is not to run one.

The only moving part is the comment system, which is self-hosted and sandboxed away from everything else.
